Areas of
interest include scientific outreach and departmental
administration. As a Fellow of the Connecticut Academy
for Education in Mathematics, Science and Technology
I am involved in numerous activities designed to improve
the teaching of science in Connecticut primary and secondary
schools. The Academy was created in 1991 as part of
an NSF funded Statewide Systemic Iniative grant. As
Director of the Connecticut
Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, I bring
to campus each March approximately 200 high school students
interested in mathematics and science (along with about
50 teachers) for a two day symposium of lectures, laboratory
tours and peer presentations of original research. Top
presenters are selected to attend the National JSHS
and to compete with the winners of other regional symposia.
I also am a co-founder of the summer
science camp program KAST
(Kids Are Scientists Too) designed for middle school
students. This program provides experience with hands-on
laboratory experiments in chemistry and other science
disciplines.
As Chair of the Department of Chemistry's
New
Building Committee, I have been involved in all
phases of the planning and design of our new $57 million
building. Construction was started in December of 1996
and we expect to move in during the summer of 1998.
