Cecile N. Hurley manages the freshman
chemistry program (Chem 124-126) and coordinates the
activities the teaching assistants for that course.
She is also the coordinator for all the teaching assistants
in the chemistry department. She is interested in exploring
students' learning processes in a science course. Her
particular interests lie in collaborative learning for
which she is the recipient of an NSF grant in curricular
reform. She is also interested in therole of gender
in solving word problems in science in mathematics.
She is the co-author (with William Masterton) of a leading
freshman chemistry textbook. She is constantly trying
out new techniques in her teaching to help students
learn better, retain more, and overcome their anxieties
about taking a university science course in their freshman
year.
