Research Interests
Development of synthetic strategies toward the step-by-step conversion of one or more pyrrolic units in porphyrins into non-pyrrolic heterocycles. We are studying to which extend the modifications affect their chemical reactivity, conformation, conformational flexibility, coordination, and photochemical properties. These porphyrinoids find use as models for chlorins found in naturally occurring photosynthetic centers. The strongly light absorbing, emitting, and sensitizing properties of these chromo phores are utilized as in cancer photodynamic therapy, fluorescence labeling, and chemosensing.
