Ph.D. students in good standing are guaranteed: financial support for 5 years as teaching and/or research assistants, access to health benefits (including dental), and waived tuition.

Research

The Department of Chemistry has approximately 30 faculty members with active research programs encompassing modern aspects of bioanalytical, biomaterials, biological, catalytic, computational, nanomaterials, organometallic, organic, and polymer chemistry. A significant fraction of faculty research addresses biological and biomedical problems, nanomaterials, and energy research.

Collaboration

UConn Chemistry researchers engage in extensive collaborations with faculty and students within and outside the department. Many faculty even hold joint appointments with other departments at UConn and the UConn Health Center. Faculty members have wide-ranging collaborations extending throughout the world including National Institutes of Health, major industrial companies, and U.S. and foreign universities and research institutes.

The modern Chemistry Building and nearby departments and institutes offer an extensive array of state-of-the-art equipment for research and education.

Choose Your Own Advisor

After classes start in August, graduate students are invited to meet with the various faculty members and research groups before deciding upon their advisor.

Graduate Programs

Students may attain a master's degree or a Ph.D. in chemistry. Students work with their selected advisory committee (a major advisor and at least two other members) to design a plan of study best suited to them.

Financial Support

Ph.D. students in good standing are guaranteed financial support for 5 years as teaching and/or research assistants, access to health benefits (including dental), and waived tuition.

Each year, the Chemistry Department offers awards and scholarships based on academic merit, research achievement, and teaching performance. The UConn Graduate School also offers academic and need-based aid, including doctoral dissertation fellowships and conference participation awards.
