What is your current (or most recent) job, what does a typical day look like, and how did UConn prepare you for this role?
My typical day involves teaching American Sign Language, working on grants and publications, mentoring interns in meetings. UConn prepared me for these various roles.
Tell us about your experience as a Chemistry student at UConn.
I was involved in research, a student organization, and was also a teaching assistant. Dr. Amy Howell, Dr. Peczuh, Dr. Smith, Dr. Bailey, Dr. Bobbit, Dr. Dennis Wright, and Ms Cecile Hurley particularly influenced my experience at UConn.
Can you tell us about your experience post-graduation?
I did my postdoctoral work at the School of Pharmacy under Dr. Dennis Wright (2006-2008). I then obtained a faculty position at Gallaudet University in Washington DC (2008 – present). I have trained and mentored more than 25 Deaf and Hard of Hearing interns, obtained several Federal grants, and collaborations with several universities and institutions. I have provided advice to various universities on accommodation for Deaf and Hard of Hearing interns and graduate students.
What is one piece of advice that you would give to current students?
Take one step at a time and enjoy your time at UConn. It is a special place that will place you on a path towards success. Be flexible and creative in pursuing future careers. The world is changing very fast requiring that we all adapt to meet new challenges.
