GAANN Fellowship Program

Chemistry Ph.D. students can apply for the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) Fellowship Program. Supported by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the UConn Department of Chemistry, this program awards grants of up to three years to Ph.D. students who demonstrate academic excellence, financial need, and a commitment to pursuing a doctoral degree in chemistry.

About the Program

GAANN Fellowships in the Department of Chemistry focus on research at the intersection between chemical synthesis, models, and data science. Fellowships provide students with support that enriches their educational experience, including a generous stipend, academic mentorship, and teaching experience.

Fellowships are renewable for up to three years, contingent on satisfactory progress. Fellows may receive up to an additional two years of support as teaching or research assistants.

Eligibility

To be considered for the program, students must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or national; a U.S. permanent resident; or able to provide evidence from the Immigration and Naturalization Service that they are in the U.S. for other than a temporary purpose with the intention of becoming permanent residents.
  • Be an incoming or currently enrolled Ph.D. student in the UConn Department of Chemistry.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Have an excellent academic record and demonstrate superior ability.
  • Plan to pursue a career in teaching or research.

Program Benefits

GAANN Fellows receive:

  • A stipend of up to $37,000 annually.

  • Opportunities to attend teaching workshops, build pedagogical skills, and teach undergraduate courses.

How to Apply

Qualified applicants must:

  • Complete the FAFSA. The Bursar’s Office will use the information submitted through this form to calculate the student’s stipend amount, up to $37,000.
  • Apply to the UConn Graduate School. Eligible applicants will automatically be considered for the GAANN Fellowship.
